The Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia offers this year, once again, the Calligraphy workshop in Italian and English language, held by the artist Monica Dengo. The course will be articulated in two modules, three days each, with the possibility of attending one module or both. The location will be the Correr Museum, to offer the possibility to observe in person the ancient manuscripts preserved in the Historical Library. In the same location students will work and experiment with the potentials of handwriting as an expressive medium. This year the course will be dedicated to the stroke with pointed and squared edge instruments. We will compare ancient and contemporary manuscripts to understand how our perception of writing has changed, in relation to the body, the legibility, the gesture and the expression.  Both modules will end with the making of a book by each participant.

WORKSHOP A
The Art of Handwriting: slow and meditative gestures and rhythms
September 29/30 – October 1st

This course will be dedicated to gesture and rhythm in cursive writing, with pointed instruments:

nibs, brushes and any experimental instrument made with metal, wood or sponge purposely made to produce a gestural mark, non retouched, for contemporary works.

The teacher, artist calligrapher Monica Dengo, will give a performance at the the beginning of the workshop, initiating students to their work. From the strokes produced, new writings and textures will emerge.

We will compare ancient and contemporary manuscripts in order to understand how our perception of writing has changed, in particular the relation between body and writing, legibility and writing, rhythm and expression. Every day each student will produce a book.

  • Friday September 29, 10:00 – 17:30
    Museo Correr Library

Program presentation.
Monica Dengo performance.
We will begin to work with the most important element of cursive writing: rhythm. Students will develop many different rhythms, paying attention in particular to time, force and form.
All the works produced will become books.

  • Saturday September 30, 10:00 – 17:30
    Museo Correr Library

The rhythms of the first day will be the foundation for the development of each student’s cursive writings. We will see how cursive maintains the gesture of the writer, therefore the relation with the body, and how it is possibile to develop a very legible hand or a very expressive one. We will observe the diversity in the relation between stroke/rhythm and space in the legible text and in the illegible one, through the making of textures. All the works produced will become books.

  • Sunday October 1, 10:00 – 17:30

We will develop new graphic compositions, looking at rhythms and time in our writings and comparing them with rhythms and time in our books. Finally we will bind a “book of books” with all the books made during the course.

WORKSHOP B
The Art of Writing by Hand: Brief and light gestures and rhythms
October 6/7/8
Museo Correr Library

This course will be dedicated to gesture and rhythm writing with squared edge instruments: nibs, brushes and any experimental instrument, made with cardboard, metal or wood, purposely designed to produce strokes with the traditional squared edge, for contemporary works.

The teacher, artist calligrapher Monica Dengo, will give a performance at the the beginning of the workshop, initiating students to their work. From the strokes produced, new writings, alphabets and textures will emerge.

We will compare ancient and contemporary manuscripts in order to understand how our perception of writing has changed, in particular the relation between body and writing, legibility and writing, rhythm and expression.

Every day each student will produce a finished book.

  • Friday October 6 10:00 – 17:30
    Museo Correr Library

    Program presentation.
    Monica Dengo performance.
Study and development of new strokes through the experimentation with traditional and invented instruments. Students will only work with strokes, without a relation to letterforms. All the works produced will become books.

  • Saturday October 7, 10:00 – 17:30
    Museo Correr Library

Making the text our own: how the relation between text and space determines the legibility and visual perception of text. Every student will work with its favorite instrument to crate textures and compositions, both legible and illegible, opening the text to new space/stroke/writing relations. All the works produced will become books.

  • Sunday October 8, 10:00 – 17:00
    Museo Correr Library

We will develop new graphic compositions, looking at rhythms and time in our writings and comparing them with rhythms and time in our books. Finally we will bind a “book of books” with all the books made during the course.
